NYCxDESIGN Design Pavilion 2023

As a premiere New York City destination, we are honored to host the NYCxDESIGN Design Pavilion, a spectacular public design exhibition. It's that time of the year when creativity, innovation, and the spirit of New York come together during Archtober, the city's month-long tribute to architecture. The Meatpacking District proudly presents two installations that are redefining the urban landscape and inspiring dialogue on materiality, sustainability, and social justice. Bamboo Cloud

Hovering over our crown jewel Gansevoort Plaza, the Bamboo Cloud, crafted by the Shanghai-based architecture studio llLab., challenges conventional perceptions of bamboo. It explores the potential of bamboo as an organic, sustainable building material, and it's a testament to the power of design. This installation breaks boundaries, showcasing the strength and beauty of bamboo.

Composed of bamboo strips woven into a porous surface, the pavilion finds its form through the material's internal forces, ultimately stabilizing as a hollow, resilient space. Illuminated by world-renowned architectural lighting design firm L’Observatoire International and Nanometer Lighting Color Kinetics, Bamboo Cloud transforms into a breathtaking spectacle at night, casting a golden glow on our streets.

Public Display

Adjacent to Bamboo Cloud, Public Display, a spatial composition by Michael Bennett, a former Super Bowl Champion and now Founding Principal and Creative Director at Studio Kër, provides a unique setting for public interaction and dialogue.

This installation celebrates the interplay between materials and space, utilizing Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) to create a perfect balance between mass and space, weight and lightness. It serves as a conversation pit for Design Talks, featuring discussions curated by the Stockholm-based industrial design studio Form Us with Love, exploring critical sustainability topics such as waste management and the circular economy.
