REINVENTING TRASH TALK
Concentrating on the functional details of the district, Meatpacking has recently overhauled its sanitation program with the introduction of specially designed trash collection corrals.
Developed by Fantastica, a NYC-based design studio, and fabricated by A-porcel, a Bronx-based architectural fabricator, these corrals are made from standard Yodock water barriers, typically used at construction sites, clad with Omega-Lite aluminum architectural panels, with other fasteners and flashings.
The implementation of these corrals not only helps to improve the visual aesthetic of the community, but also contributes to a cleaner and more pleasant environment for residents and visitors alike.
The aim of moving trash collection off the sidewalk and into the curb lane is to reclaim limited sidewalk space for pedestrians.
The corrals were developed as part of the DSNY's "Clean Curbs" program, which provides guidance for organizations like the Meatpacking District to move trash collection off the sidewalk and into the curb lane. On average, the Meatpacking District collects about 60,000 42-gallon bags of garbage a year, or about 164 bags a day, coordinated and handled by our ACE team.
By consolidating trash collection and reducing the amount of clutter on the sidewalk, the Meatpacking District aims to make a positive impact on the community by promoting a pedestrian centered public realm.
