Gina Le has been in the Meatpacking District for over 20 years so you could say she’s certainly seen it all. Her salon on 13th Street is always a welcome place, and if you happen to walk by during the day you’ll always be greeted by an enthusiastic wave or smile. We love Gina Le Salon because of Gina’s vivacious personality and her passion for her clients. Read on to learn more about Gina Le, hair trends for the upcoming year, and how to take better care of your hair at home.
What inspired you to open Gina Le Salon?
I was inspired to open Gina Le after having a salon in the Meatpacking District already. I had a salon on 14th street and 8th ave called Gina Thomas. I decided to go out on my own after seven years with Thomas. I was lucky enough to be able to stay in my favorite neighborhood. I found the space on Thirteenth Street and Eighth Avenue. Gina Le was created.
What’s your favorite thing about being a small business owner?
I love creating a community. I love having people come to me to feel comfortable, and at home in my salon. People always say hello and stop by even if they do not have an appointment. It is even more important at this moment during this trying time to share some positive energy.
As an independently run, women-owned business, have you encountered any challenges? If so, what are they?
Being an independent, woman owned business I feel the same challenges other small business owners feel. It is difficult being in New York City and of course very expensive, and only gets harder as the years go on. But I love my salon and owning a business.
What trends are you predicting for hair in 2021?
The hair trends this year are artistic and creative works of art. Our clients have been asking us to think outside the norm using their hair as a canvas. The trends these days are bold color blocking, chunky streaks, and pastels. Another thing we are seeing are clients requesting hair stencils to create paintings on their hair.
What are you seeing so far in 2021 for people coming into the salon? What are people requesting most?
Since the pandemic started, a lot of people have seen a different version of themselves, because they haven’t gone to the salon for many months. This leads to a very detailed consultation, because of the changes in their hair, and where we can go from there.
What can we do at home to take better care of our hair?
Go through all of your hair care products, to decide what is good for you and what is not. You would probably need a consultation to figure what’s best for you at home. But in general, the one product that most people would benefit from is a hair mask. I recommend doing hair masks more often around once a week. Just like we do face masks and put lotion on our hands, our hair needs the same care. Winter is very drying and the moisture from the mask is beneficial.
Any tips for hair care for the upcoming year?
During the winter months and stressful times, it’s very important to feed our bodies with healthy foods and vitamins. This is not only for our bodies but for our hair. One of my favorite products at the moment is Vitamin C shampoo, conditioner, and repair serum from AG. Vitamin C is important for us to take during these times and now we have a line of products that will put these vitamins directly into the hair. I myself have been dealing with hair loss due to stress and I have seen a dramatic change with my hair using these products. Now my hair is healthier and stronger and even longer that it has been in a while.
