INSIDE MEATPACKING’S NEW, AFFORDABLE REHEARSAL SPACE
Artists of New York, unite! We are proud to shed light on a new, affordable rehearsal space that has opened in the Meatpacking District. Named the The West Village Rehearsal Co-op, it is located at 60-74 Gansevoort St. and provides 1,500 sq ft of A.D.A.-compliant space.
Thanks to a collaboration between Community Board 2, Aurora Capital, and four theater groups - New Ohio, HERE, Rattlestick and Indispace- the space aims to support the work of 1,500 artists annually and will be programmed 50 weeks a year.
The space will be reserved for Community Board 2-based theater companies for 6 months each year, and available at a subsidized rate of no more than $10 per hour for IndieSpace artists.
IndieSpace is a theater fund dedicated to radically transparent, responsive and equity-focused funding, real estate programs, professional development, and advocacy to individual artists, theater companies, and indie venues. The West Village Rehearsal Co-op will serve as a blueprint for similar artistic venues throughout the city.
And just in case you were worried about a short term commitment, this is a multi-generational collaboration where the lease has been signed for 99 years.
“Aurora is proud to have The West Village Rehearsal Co-Op on Gansevoort Street," said Jared Epstein of Aurora Capital Associates. "Providing space for theater artists to craft stories and rehearse at a very affordable rate is good for the Meatpacking District and for New York City. Aurora has long been a supporter of providing unique venues for artists in the Meatpacking District, from helping to bring a "Cornelia in Exile" concert to Gansevoort Plaza to supporting the production of Tectonic Theater's award winning Seven Deadly Sins, the arts bring immeasurable value to our communities and we're proud to be a part of it.”
