ON VIEW IN MEATPACKING: THE MEETING POINT VOLUME 2
The second round of artists are now on display at The Meeting Point gallery located at 2 Gansevoort Street. The gallery is the focal point of From A Place, Of A Place – a neighborhood wide, five-part program in partnership with ARTNOIR that uses art and performance to celebrate Black art, culture and commerce.
The Meeting Point brings together the talents of emerging Black artists under the ethos of community building and ensuring they have a seat at the table. The selected artists have become fully immersed in the neighborhood to inform their work, which are inspired by the Meatpacking District. Additionally, all artwork is available for sale.
Featured artists as a part of the second exhibition are:
Ferguson Amo: Ghanaian artist who works across a variety of mediums, including hyper-realism drawing, installations, and mixed media, exploring a contemporary African identity in the diaspora.
Kemar Wynter: An American contemporary artist and painter from Brooklyn.
Dana Davenport: A Korean and Black American interdisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn.
Lindsey Brittain Collins: A painter working across multiple mediums including collage, sculpture, and installation exploring how architecture, economic structures, history, and aesthetics shape urban environments and racial perceptions.
Kim Dacres: Bronx-based artist and sculptor of Jamaican descent using tires, rubber, and found objects to create abstract sculptures and totems that honor ideas, music, phrases, and individuals in her life
Ivan Forde: A contemporary artist based in Manhattan, working across photography, printmaking, collage, sound performance, and installation.
Ryan Cosbert: An African-American (of Haitian & Guyanese descent) conceptual artist whose work approaches and focuses on her own humanistic experiences, self-expression, political issues and historical narratives.
Zalika Azim: A New York based artist with ancestral roots in Aiken, South Carolina and Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago exploring the tensions between personal and collective narratives to investigate the ways in which memory, migration and belonging are contextualized in relation to colonized landscapes.
Aya Brown: A Brooklyn based artist whose practice is focused on documenting unseen people, with an emphasis on bringing visibility to queer Black and brown women.
LaKela Brown: A Brooklyn based artist working in sculpture and plaster relief, whose work is strongly influenced by hip-hop culture and African American aesthetics.
Freddie L. Rankin II: A self-taught photographic artist with a notable fascination with film photography, traveling across the Caribbean, Europe, and the United States, capturing what he deems a deeply “personal narrative…, the untold story of life as an African-American male in a cross-cultural world.”
In addition to the 11 selected gallery exhibitionists, Dodi King, an artist and writer whose practice spans painting, assemblage and poetry, was selected to participate as the second artist in residency.
