Coexistence and Community from the Nilgiris to New York

The Great Elephant Migration kicked off its residency in Meatpacking with a powerful panel discussion titled Coexistence and Community from the Nilgiris to New York.

Dr. Tarsh Thekaekara, Director of The Real Elephant Collective, discussed the elephant-human interactions that prompted this migration. Ruth Ganesh, Trustee of Elephant Family + Co-Founder of The Coexistence Collective, highlighted the coexistence of humans and elephants in the Nilgiris. Terri Carta, Executive Director of Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Park Conservancy, addressed urban conservation in NYC, and Jeffrey LeFrancois, Executive Director of Meatpacking BID, showcased the district’s role in connecting art, policy, and culture. The event highlighted how global and local communities can collaborate for conservation, setting the stage for continued conversations throughout the residency.

From September 7 through October 20, experience the presence of the herd in Meatpacking and explore their powerful story of coexistence.
