Meatpacking District

Opened in 2019, the ninth ave plazas have created a central spine of public open space through the center of the Meatpacking District. The culmination of 10+ years of planning and construction there is now an additional 30,000 SF of space for visitors, residents, and workers to enjoy.

NINTH AVE PLAZAS

The Meatpacking District's POD plan is an economic development initiative to expand and improve the public realm with a focus on the pedestrian experience. This includes a range of placemaking initiatives from public art installations and bicycle facilities to the expansion of public plaza spaces and major initiatives including the Western Gateway Public Realm Vision.

PEDESTRIAN-ORIENTED DISTRICT | POD

The Tenth Ave corridor of the Meatpacking District was designed for an industrial neighborhood, meant to accommodate trucks and little else. With changes to the use and character of the Meatpacking District, this area is in need of transformation. The MDMA proposes the creation of a new neighborhood front porch from the back of house space that's safe and inviting, people-centered and balanced, connected and seamless, rational and organized, chic and timeless.

WESTERN GATEWAY PUBLIC REALM VISION

A first implementation of the Western Gateway vision, Gansevoort Landing will be transformed into a new pedestrian plaza space with the support from the MDMA, TF Cornerstone NYC DOT, NYS DOT, and Whitney Museum. Better connecting Gansevoort Street and the Meatpacking District to the new Gansevoort Peninsula Park opening in 2023.
