HSFI 100th Anniversary Fashion Show
The future of fashion walked on Meatpacking's cobblestones on Wednesday May 20, as seniors at the High School of Fashion Industries (HSFI) presented their annual senior fashion show on Gansevoort Plaza. This year's theme was Time and Time Again, an homage to the school's 100th anniversary. From the 1920s to the 2020s, HSFI fashion majors strutted down a rain-soaked runway showing off fashions emblematic of the decades, with music to match.
Many of the students played with color in their fashions, including the opening look -- a slinky turquoise two-piece dress, with a large dramatic fan representing the 1920s. Other students played with proportions, such as a 30s-inspired oversize grey suit suit exaggerated jacket lapels and jauntily accessorized with a cobalt-blue tie and fedora, or a 2000s Japanese kawaii-inspired tiered bubble dress. Matching looks were also in vogue last night -- a model in a flouncy little black dress walked with her little black dog, and two models showed off matching burnt orange and mint green Space Age-esque sets. One of the most standout looks from the show was the closing look. The model/designer wore a sculptural black dress made out of PVC panels. The look was completed with a hood and two-tiered skirt-- the top layer was a hoop skirt that was angled upwards to reveal the bottom layer, a textured, almost spiky-looking, mermaid skirt.
Last night, HSFI's students took a classic theme, fashion through the decades, and gave it their own original spin. Familiar tropes and silhouettes were fashioned into something new, individual, and exciting. In these students' hands, we can expect that the next century of fashion is going to be really, really cool.
